Re: Sharapova failed a drugs test

Having read a bit more about this drug it appears it had been talked about one that was used to improve performance under the guise of treating a 'condition'. She has just been stupid in that now what she was doing 'legally' has finally been caught up with & she hasn't shifted horses quick enough. Seems also there is another one for a 'thyroid condition' that hasn't been caught up with which is used in a similar way. Am sure there are others.
Comment by Dr Peter Brukner who was Liverpool's doctor and now looks after the Aust cricket team:
Just how much impact the drug has on elite performance is unclear, but Dr Brukner, a professor of sports medicine at La Trobe University, said "it's clearly been used for that reason" by some athletes.
Dr Brukner said he expected Sharapova to spend at least two years on the sidelines but did not rule out the possibility of her being slapped with the maximum four-year ban. "You can get some remittance from that for inadvertent use, but it is arguable whether this was inadvertent," he told ABC News.
"She knew she was taking it and presumably she assumed it was performance-enhancing.
"The fact she may not have known it was banned probably won't qualify her for that [leeway for inadvertent use].
"I think she is in for a long suspension."

LOL at anyone who doesn't think that the vast majority of professional sportspeople are doing something or other to get an extra edge.

Taking a drug for a condition she doesn't have? Very popular amongst Russian athletes apparently...the drug, that is, not the medical condition.

She got the new list of banned substances and didn't bother reading it? No-one from her medical team knew that changes were made to the banned list each year and it might, just might be a good idea to keep up-to-date?
Sounds believable

Mark my words we're now going to hear about the use of this drug by a number of international athletes from different sports. That's an awful lot of sports persons with "heart problems".

This drug enhances motor function and oxygen in the blood, can't believe it's only been banned this year.
If her story is true and she's been taking it for medical reasons well before it was put on the banned list, her ban could be pretty small.
Whatever happens someones not done their job.

You don't know that, maybe without drugs she's only as good as Tim Henman.

should be stripped of the 2012 French Open, and it awarded to runner up Sara Errani (one of my favourites)

I'm sure if that is true that will come out over the next few days.
I'm guessing every player gets an email with a (long) list of the current banned substances every time it is updated. She or someone in her team should be monitoring that list against what she is taking. Even if it is under a different brand name.

From memory, Dan M I think (sorry if wrong) wrote extensively and informatively on the whole subject of drug taking and the actual benefits, way back on ITBS
Hopefully he will drop in here and reprise
That Baco thing was a fascinating artilcle/docu from way back that stuck in the memory and proved prophetic

She's a liar. Don't be fooled and think there is nothing to see here.
The drug isn't even approved for human use in the United States, where Sharapova lives. If she was taking it for a medical problem her doctors could have easily written a TUE,she claims she's been taking it since '06, most of the clinical trials for this substance didn't start till '08. She's a cheat, end of.

Well in fairness she does say that she got sent an email with the list of banned substances added to the list on it and she just didn't bother looking at it
Question though - it's been decided now for whatever reason that this drug is in some way performance enhancing and is banned. For 10 years she has been taking it (legally). Does this change sirt if undermine her success? It does a bit to me - because some measure if what she achieved must have been down to the drug

Given she has an Aust Open singles title perhaps she can recommend some pills to Andy 0-5 Murray No relation to Alistair 0-5 Cook of course.
